Mil thickness of these liners is the same liner thickness used in many in
ground pools.
The truest measure of a pool liner is done using
an international standard of measurement, Mil thickness. This is an industry
standard and is measured using a micrometer. Just like an inch is an inch, so too
is Mil thickness. Doughboy (HII) does not use “gauge” thickness as
a measurement for their liners. Instead,
they use a true standard of measurement, Mil and not the subjective one “gauge”. Gauge thickness is an arbitrary form of measurement
for liners. Though gauge thickness is
used in the electrical industry for wire measurement, it does not apply to the
swimming pool industry.
Additionally, in ground swimming pool liner
thickness, has always been and still is measured using Mil as a thickness
standard.Both pools use liners, so why
should above ground pool liners have their thickness, stated differently? They shouldn’t. Swimming pool liner “gauge” thickness
is simply a marketing ploy so the manufacturer can throw out high numbers and
not the legitimate thickness number.

Whether the liner installation be for an in ground pool or
an above ground pool, there are some important steps for proper liner fit, when
filling the pool. Neither in ground or
above ground pool liners install well in the cold or colder weather. It’s always best to install a liner on a warm
day where the liner will receive a lot of sunlight.
Some Key Points:
- Before installing the liner, be certain the pool bottom is free of material
which may puncture a hole in the liner. Sifted sand or sand/cement base typically
is best for this.
- Unless the liner has been “vacuumed” back to the
pool wall and floor, only ever slow fill the pool.
- For greater liner pliability, install the liner
on a mostly sunny day where the sun can hit the liner. Above 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Remove wrinkles in the bottom of the liner
before more than 2” of water is over the liner.
